The Grunge style that has its origins in the subgenre of rock derived from alternative rock and indie rock, which emerged in the late 80s, is one of the styles that is influenced by current fashion.

Grunge fashion

The term "grunge" is used to define a specific moment in music and fashion of the twentieth century. Coming from the northwestern region of the United States in the 1980s, grunge began to have global implications for alternative bands and also in the fashion world.

Grunge music

The word "grunge" dates from 1972, but did not enter popular terminology until the birth of the sound of Seattle, a mixture of heavy-metal, punk and rock from the late 1980s.

Like San Francisco in the 1960s, Seattle, in the 1980s, was a breeding ground for youth music. The independent Sub Pop record label recorded many of Seattle's bands at low cost and is partly responsible for their garage sound. Many of these bands went on to receive international recognition, such as the Melvins, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Green River, Malfunkshun, TAD and Nirvana. Nirvana's second album was released in 1991, and its reach was global.

Cultural context

Punks and hippies used music and fashion to make strong statements about the world and are often referred to as "movements," due to this political component. While the 1980 Seattle youth were aware of politics, grunge was driven more by self-expression of sadness and disappointment, disconnection, loneliness, frustration, and perhaps it was an involuntary movement.

There was no common goal in grunge, such as "anarchy" in punk or "peace" of hippies. Despite this lack of unifying intentionality, grunge gave voice to a post-punk generation, Generation X, bored, lost and emotionally neglected.

Grunge style

If the punk antimode stance can be interpreted as "against fashion," that of grunge can be seen as "out of fashion." Grunge youth, born of hippies and raised in punk, reintegrates these components through their own post-hippie and post-punk aesthetics. The Grunge essentially looked disheveled, not combined. Ripped jeans, flannel shirts and dirty shirts with obsolete logos, and old-fashioned black military boots.

The low-budget anti-materialist philosophy caused by the recession boosted purchases in second-hand stores and outlets of army surpluses. Vintage floral print dresses and doll-style nightgowns are worn with oversized sweaters and pierced cardigans.

The grunge includes layers and juxtapositions of patterns and textures. The consumer is given the freedom to choose, not to be a slave to a style, trend or designer, and the confidence to create personal sets with the goal of self-expression through clothing.

A few years after the emergence of this new aesthetic, it was absorbed by designers and large fashion houses, becoming a trend, and losing its original meaning. For what is common currency see in the collections of the most influential firms and designers in the world of fashion garments such as leather jackets, torn jeans, plaid shirts of male style and much denim in general.

Being really the jackets or leather jackets one of the basic garments of the Grunge style, which are gaining popularity today, since they can be seen accompanying all kinds of sets, whether they are casual or more formal, since they are a of the most versatile garments.

On the other hand, very large plaid shirts also gain an important role, these being one of the typical garments that represent the Grunge style in current fashion.

While the denim is also manifested in jeans, shorts, jackets and vests, all of them coming in the most worn version of the denim, as holes and hems are left out.

All these garments are combined with feminine floral prints, tops and even transparencies; which gives us sets full of styles and ideals for all those who enjoy a fresh and youthful dress.
